He also noted that his team at the time, which included Comedy Central, told him to not address the situation, which Mencia said made him look guilty. In a September 2019 interview, Mencia maintained he did nothing wrong and reiterated he has never stolen material. “I put all that time into that place, and that Mencia thing - I thought we were doing the right thing. Rogan told Saget that despite his belief that he was doing the right thing by confronting Mencia in such a pubic way at the time, the outcome - he was banned for years from The Comedy Store - was not what he expected. One of the comedians in the video was George Lopez, who has also accused Mencia of stealing jokes. Rogan then posted the video online, spliced with a number of comics doing their versions of a joke compared to a later version by Mencia. The entire conversation harkened back to 2007 when Rogan famously confronted Mencia onstage at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles and accused him in front of the audience and fellow comics of plagiarism. When Mencia later returned to Los Angeles, he showed such educational prowess that he was immediately promoted to the tenth grade.Saget pointed out that one of the greatest comics ever, his close friend Robin Williams, had also been accused of stealing jokes. In his early teens, Mencia moved back to Honduras because his family wanted him to avoid the destructive gang culture of East Los Angeles. His parents sent him to the United States when he was about three months old, where he was raised in the Maravilla Projects in Los Angeles, California by his aunt and uncle. This led to appearances on “In Living Color,” “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “Moesha” and “An Evening at the Improv.”Mencia comes from a humble background, born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the 17th of 18 children. After he found success on the L.A comedy circuit, Mencia was named 'International Comedy Grand Champion' from Buscando Estrellas (the Latino version of Star Search). He later showcased at The Comedy Store and became a regular, performing nightly. The Heartbreak KidMencia began his career doing stand-up on amateur night at the world renowned comedy club, Laugh Factory.
